The Main Street approach, formally recognized in 1980, has helped over 3000 "Main Streets" throughout the country achieve a revitalization and rehabilitation of their core downtown districts. The program is a comprehensive strategy that has been tailored to meet our local needs and opportunities. It encompasses work in four distinct areas:
Organization involves getting everyone working toward the same goal and assembling appropriate human and financial resources to implement our program.
Promotion sells a positive image of our commercial district and encourages consumers and investors to live, work, shop, play and invest in downtown.
Design helps to develop Downtown Binghamton into an inviting atmosphere. Capitalizing on our best assets such as historic buildings, we hope to convey a positive visual message about our business district and what it has to offer.
Economic Restructuring strengthens a communtiy's existing economic assets while expanding and diversifying its economic base. We work with existing business owners and help recruit new compatible businesses downtown as well.
